Café series: Up In Smoke

This is part of a series of photos taken in Paris in the 1980’s at Le Rostand café, which borders on the Luxembourg Gardens. At the time, every Parisian café was filled with smoke, which for an American in Paris was a surprise, since smoking was forbidden in eating establishments in America. Taken in by all this smoke, I set out to do both a film and a photo series on smokers.  I wanted to examine smoking through the eyes of someone who has never smoked, yet who has an anthropological interest in this activity, and in the reasons why people smoke and why they quit.
